Toward a Polished Supply Chain
Four years ago, MasterBrand Cabinets CIO Dave Mewes faced one of the toughest challenges of his career. Fortune Brands, the parent holding company, wanted to diversify its portfolio of cabinet products and began an acquisition spree under the MasterBrand name. Mewes' mission soon became clear: Tie together the supply-chain management systems of six diverse business units and four sales channels without replacing the dozens of legacy systems used by each group. "We couldn't go in and rip everything out because we had a business to run. And we weren't really under one large umbrella so we couldn't completely unify," he says. Mewes had to figure out an alternate way to gain visibility into the disparate order-entry systems, which included everything from SAP databases to CAD/CAM file stores to Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, so that all of the business units and sales channels could view critical information in real time. The resulting effort, which has saved the company a bundle while making supply-chain management far more efficient, has earned MasterBrand a 2006 Enterprise All-Star Award. After 18 months of intense research that began in mid-2004, Mewes and his team rolled out Vitria Technology's Perfect Order system at the end of last year. Perfect Order's robust messaging system lets employees, customers and customer service representatives link order information, including customer data, faxes and manually entered specs, from the myriad legacy applications into a unified Web-based console view, he says. "Visibility is available to any and all. They can see an order history end to end as a single project," he adds. Mewes, who used his existing network infrastructure, says his team spent US$80,000 for an architect to develop parts of the order visibility network, such as the back-order process. "Once you have a foundation of development, it is reusable. This equates to less...

Selecting the Right CRM System
Let's say your boss has asked you to explore buying a customer relationship management (CRM) software package for your bank. How can you manage the process so you find an appropriate system-without taking too much time from your other duties? Your first step will be to establish the goals for the project. Why are you buying it? What are the specific problems it is expected to solve? What opportunities will it help exploit? CRM software, by its nature as a system that combines marketing, sales and service functions, can do many different things. If you don't establish objectives, you won't be able to sort through the options and establish which solutions make sense for your situation. When you first ask about goals, you may get a general response such as "We want to know our customers better" or "We want to be more responsive to customer needs." Don't stop there. Projects like this nearly always originate with a very specific business problem-such as an inability to track sales leads or generate mailing lists or pull together a unified view of all accounts associated with an individual customer. Often there was a single incident that crystallized the problem and led senior management to recognize the need for a broader solution. Whatever else the system you select does, it had better solve that original problem. One way to come up with specific objectives is to work with the system's future users to develop scenarios. These scenarios should describe particular business processes, such as setting up a new marketing campaign that the system is expected to perform. Asking users about scenarios leads them naturally to describe the processes they care about most-although you often need to let them list several before they realize what's really important to them. But the real benefit of a scenario is...
