The Tangram is an original and addictive Chinese puzzle game. It originated in China about 300 years ago. The Chinese name for it is Qi Qiao Ban, meaning ?Seven-Board of Cunning? or ?Board of Wisdom? because it cannot be solved without a certain amount of focus and intelligent scrutiny. Tangram consists of seven pieces ? five triangles (two large, one middle and two small), a square and a rhomboid, which are in the shape of a square. A great number of shapes and patterns (puzzle silhouettes) can be constructed from these seven pieces. Originally there were several hundred Chinese figures. By 1900, the total number was increased to 900. In 1973, Dutch designers Joost Elffers and Michael Schuyt produced 750 new figures and geometric shapes. In Tangram 2000 there are totally 1, 426 tangram puzzles, which are range from representational figures such as humans, animals, architectures, articles to geometric shapes and designs.
The main goal of the game is to recreate all puzzle silhouettes by using these seven tangram pieces, no more and no less! The silhouettes are all in solid shapes, e.g. no lines between consisting pieces are visible. It?s your job to figure out how to use the seven pieces to reshape them - not easy in many cases!
